Can you gain a competitive advantage with AI?
A question we frequently receive is: "If I start using AI in my business operations now, will I be more successful than my competitor?" The answer to this is both yes and no.

In the short term, by implementing generative AI in particular into your business and work processes, you can indeed gain an advantage. Many companies in the Netherlands currently do not use AI; adoption is relatively low. If you already apply AI in your core processes, marketing support, contract analyses, or customer approach, you will indeed be more successful than your competitor who does not.
By integrating AI into your daily operations, you can work more efficiently, save costs, and make better decisions. Think about automating repetitive tasks, personalising marketing campaigns, and accelerating data analysis. These advantages can give you a significant competitive edge in a market where AI is not yet widespread.
However, in two to three years, the expectation is that every company will apply AI in their business and work processes. It's comparable to the early days of the internet: if you had a website then, you were unique. Now, almost every company has a website. The same will happen with generative AI; it will become the standard.
This means that simply deploying AI will no longer be enough to differentiate yourself. The technology will become more accessible, and its implementation will become commonplace. The real difference will be made by how you use AI and with what resources.
What, then, will be your differentiating value? Primarily the data you possess and how you use it to feed your generative AI models. Generative AI models are excellent generalists but less effective specialists because they are trained on data from the internet. This data is often biased and mainly contains general knowledge.
With the unique company data you have, you can make your AI models much more specific and effective. Data about specific processes within your company ensures that AI generates better output and optimally supports your work processes. Companies with better data will also achieve better AI results.
If your company has unique data that your competitor does not, that provides an enormous advantage. Imagine your customer churn prediction model performs 2% better than your competitor's, thanks to your data. On a large scale, this has a huge impact on your business results.
An improvement of just a few percentage points can lead to significant revenue increases or cost savings. Moreover, it is difficult for competitors to copy this advantage if they do not have the same quality or quantity of data. This creates a sustainable competitive advantage that goes beyond just technology.
This means investing in:
- Data infrastructure: ensure systems can store and process data securely and efficiently.
- Data quality: invest in cleaning and maintaining your data to ensure it is accurate and up-to-date.
- Data governance: establish policies and procedures for how data is managed and used within your organisation.
- Data analysis skills: train your team in data analysis and interpretation to maximise the value from your data.
Successfully implementing AI goes beyond just acquiring the right tools. It requires a strategic approach that considers how AI fits within your business objectives and how it can contribute to solving specific challenges.
Some steps for strategic AI implementation:
- Identify core areas: determine which processes within your company will benefit most from AI.
- Define your data needs: analyse what data you need for AI to work effectively in these areas.
- Develop a roadmap: create a plan for how you will implement AI step-by-step, including milestones and KPIs.
- Engage your team: ensure buy-in from employees and invest in training and development.
- Monitor and optimise: regularly evaluate the performance of your AI solutions and make adjustments where necessary.
- Marketing: personalisation of content and offers based on customer behaviour and preferences.
- Customer service: deployment of chatbots and virtual assistants for fast and efficient customer support.
- Production: use of AI for predictive maintenance to minimise downtime.
- Finance: risk assessment using machine learning algorithms.
By investing now in both AI and your data management, you lay the groundwork for future success. In a world where technology evolves rapidly, it is important to think ahead and act proactively. Combining AI with your unique data enables you to create innovative solutions that are difficult for competitors to replicate.
Deploying AI certainly offers short-term advantages over your competitors. But in the long term, it's about how you combine AI with your unique data. By investing now in your data management and strategic AI applications, you lay the foundation for sustained success and a lasting competitive advantage.

AI keeps getting better, yet workplace sentiment about AI is deteriorating. Research shows why adoption is as much a social challenge as a technological one: from the Matthew effect to psychological safety.
